The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program offers Direct Loans to eligible students and parents to help pay for the cost of a student's higher education. 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ is recognised as a Foreign School by the US Department of Education and is eligible to certify loans for eligible students as an approved Title IV institution.
You apply for student loans to study at 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ using the same process you use to apply for aid in the US.
Undergraduate students = Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans.
Undergraduate parents = Parent Plus Loans.
Graduate students = Unsubsidized and Grad Plus Loans

The FAFSA form must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Central time (CT) on June 30, 2026. Any corrections or updates must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. CT on Sept. 12, 2026. FAFSA®
Most degree programmes at 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ Dundee are eligible for Direct Loans. Ineligible programmes include all non-degree programmes (e.g. PG Dip, PG Cert); Distance Learning programmes. If you are not sure whether your course is eligible, please contact us to discuss.
We intend to continue offering US Federal Loans to our eligible on-campus students. We are also eligible to certify private US student loans and VA funding if students want or need that option.
If there is anything which impacts your eligibility to receive Federal loans, we will post the information on our US loans webpage, and notify our Federal loan students.
*51¶ÌÊÓÆµ is NOT eligible to certify Pell loans or grants.
We can originate your loan after all the steps here are complete.
You are a US citizen if you were born in the United States or certain US territories. If you were born abroad to parents who are US citizens, or if you have obtained citizenship status through naturalization.
The 2025–26 FAFSA® form is now available for all students and contributors. Complete the form to apply for financial aid for college, career school, or graduate school.
Once you have completed STEP 2, you can email us at usloans@abertay.ac.uk to let us know that you have applied for FAFSA and selected 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ as a potential school. Or you can wait for our process from the FAFSA system, which usually takes up to two weeks.
At 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ, our US Loan team will assess your information based on the information you fill in on your FAFSA form and calculate your Cost of Attendance (CoA) according to our tuition fees, course materials and living Cost for an academic year.
Most students will need a combination of Direct Loans (Subsidized/Unsubsidized/PLUS loans/Private loan) to cover the full CoA.
We will send you Funding Notification Letter with CoA illustrated detailing the loans available to you and you can choose on which types of Loan or combination of loans you will need for your study.
Return signed Funding Notification Letter either accepting or declining your loan options to usloans@abertay.ac.uk
Once the letter is received, 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ US Loan team will originate your loan on the US systems in early July.Ìý
If you have accepted parents PLUS loan, you will need to apply for a PLUS Loan. Please note, Plus Loan will no longer be available for new Graduate Students September 2026 onwards.
51¶ÌÊÓÆµ will send you a Funding Confirmation Letter which could be used as proof of funds when apply for your CAS.
Once you have received this letter, please upload this to CAS Shield.
The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is the legal document used to make one or more Direct Loans for one or more academic years.
There are two types of MPNs:
1. Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan MPN – A student borrower must complete and sign a Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan MPN before a school can make the first disbursement of a Direct Subsidized or Direct Unsubsidized Loan.
2. Direct PLUS Loan MPN – A graduate/professional student borrower or parent borrower must complete and sign a Direct PLUS Loan MPN before a school can make the first disbursement of a Direct PLUS Loan.
Entrance counselling ensures you understand the terms and conditions of your loan and your rights and responsibilities. You'll learn what a loan is, how interest works, your options for repayment, and how to avoid delinquency and default.
If you have ticked all the boxes above, we will originate your loan in the disbursement system early August.
We will disburse your loan in October once you have registered on campus.
To remain eligible for US federal student loans throughout your studies, a student must make satisfactory academic progress (SAP). Ìý
The University's SAP policy applies to all undergraduate and postgraduate students taking Federal Student Aid to study at 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ. If a student fails to meet SAP requirements, full details of the SAP process and the procedures you need to follow are outlined on our Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAP).
You must apply for your US loan each year.
Private student loans are available to 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ US undergraduate and graduate students. They’re designed to fill the funding gap when savings, scholarships, and federal student aid aren’t enough. Or a student may choose to go for Private loan entirely.
Unlike federal student loans, private student loans are not sponsored or guaranteed by government agencies and don’t require a FAFSA. They’re credit-based, which means a borrower’s credit score and history are taken into consideration, along with other factors.

51¶ÌÊÓÆµ is able to process funding applications fromÌý.To receive this funding, you must apply directly through the VA. PleaseÌýÌýfor information about foreign schools.Ìý
Once you have contacted the VA and received a response on your eligibility, please emailÌýusloans@abertay.ac.uk. Please include an updated copy of your Certificate of Eligibility (CoE), which must be obtained from the VA.
When you have met the other conditions of your offer from us, our International Office will complete the enrolment certification forms and submit them to the VA. Please include the name of the degree you wish to pursue as 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ may need to seek VA approval for that subject prior to your enrolment.
